Pro Bono and practical advice

For over a decade I have lectured at the University of Latvia on arbitration and alternative dispute resolution. I am glad to deliver this course not only to law students - I am ready to share my experience and knowledge with a wider circle of interested people without reward.

On some occasions I provide legal advice without reward in cases the outcome of which could be significant to the interpretation of legal provisions. This also applies to preparing applications to the Constitutional Court of Latvia and other judicial institutions. Send applications for review to probono@auza.lv.

If the developer has failed to meet its obligations under the preliminary agreement and you have lost interest in the home, the Consumer Rights Protection Law allows you to withdraw from the agreement unilaterally. A buyer can defend their interests not only through civil proceedings but also in administrative procedure - in practice this has allowed a client to recover the money paid for the home.

First assess the debtor's solvency and good faith, and the document on which the debt is based - a private loan, a promissory note or a notarial deed. If the debtor is deliberately withholding the money, the solution is a court claim with security measures; if the debtor is insolvent, filing an insolvency petition should be considered. What matters most is a strategy that fits the situation.
